Sinn Féin Ard Fheis to bring two thousand delegates to Mayo this weekend

The first Sinn Féin Ard Fheis to be held in the west of Ireland will take place in the TF Hotel and Theatre, Castlebar, this weekend. The two day event will see up to 2,000 people coming to the county town for the occasion.

At the March meeting of the council Mr Campbell gave the members a brief presentation on the research work he has carried out so far, which will go back as far as 1750. Campbell’s presentation gave the background to the town getting its first charter and the different types of local government that were in operation over the past 400 years in the town, and how it was used for different purposes by those in power at different times.

The residents of a housing estate in Castlebar have been left in limbo following the withdrawal of the services of an agent who had been acting on behalf of the management company for the upkeep and maintenance of the estate.

Castlebar councillors throw their support behind Humbert plan

A plan to stage a massive re-enactment of General Humbert’s invasion of Ireland from his landing in Kilcummin through the taking of Killala and on to the capture of Castlebar has been given the backing of the members of Castlebar Town Council. The event which is called “In Humbert’s Footsteps” is being planned as a major event of this year’s Gathering festivities in Mayo. The members of the council were given a presentation on the planned event by Mick Baines and Damien Cashin from the committee who are organising the event, which will be staged over the weekend of Friday, August 16 to Sunday, August 18 starting in north Mayo and finishing off in Castlebar.

Hospital sends woman home with wrong prescription

A 59-year-old Castlebar woman who presented to Mayo General Hospital with chest pains last Saturday was sent home with the prescription of a 90-year-old man from Mulranny it was revealed this week. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne raised the issue at Tuesday night’s meeting of Castlebar Town Council where he told the meeting that the issue was only discovered the next day when a family member of the woman went to get her prescription filled in a pharmacy and it was the pharmacist who pointed out that the name on it was for a man who lived in Mulranny.

The right decision but not an easy one

“It’s about time Castlebar turned its face on Lough Lannagh and not its back,” said An Taoiseach Enda Kenny at the launch of the town’s ambitious €12.5 million National Pursuits Academy in June 2012.
